If you are diagnosed with cancer, everything seems to stop. You want answers about your diagnosis, your chances to beat it and your treatment options. Holy Family Memorial’s Cancer Center team will walk with you through your journey with cancer.
Our entire Cancer Center team of doctors, nurses, therapists and other health care professionals will be at your side to take care of your physical, spiritual and emotional needs. We will support you on bad days and celebrate your success on good days. You will learn why we are nationally accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons, has accredited the Cancer Center since 1998. In 2021 our program received a rating of 3 year approval with Commendation as a Community Hospital Cancer Program.
The CoC encompasses the best minds in cancer care using expertise from the entire oncology community to set the highest standards of care for CoC-accredited cancer programs.
CoC accreditation challenges cancer programs to enhance the care they provide by addressing patient-centered needs and measuring the quality of the care they deliver against national standards. It provides value through improved patient outcomes across all domains of care: access and service, satisfaction and well-being, quality of care and cancer outcomes.
The staff of the Cancer Center is passionate about providing this high level of service to our patients. We are pleased to have received this accreditation.
Our partnership with the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network means that if needed, your local HFM provider can connect you with all the resources of eastern Wisconsin’s only academic health system, including access to advanced treatment options and clinical trials not widely available.
Cancer screenings can help detect cancer early, when you have more treatment options available. Detecting cancer early also provides you the best chance for a positive outcome. Cancer screenings are offered through our program. Through our partnership with the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network you have access to additional cancer screenings. Talk to your doctor to learn what cancer screenings may be appropriate for you and when you should have them.
Newly diagnosed cancer patients are offered prehabilitation, with the goal of helping patients become physically and emotionally stronger before their treatment.
Cancer Support Group
Cancer patients and their caregivers are invited to attend our support group to connect with others and share their feelings and experiences. A chaplain leads the group and offers encouragement, commitment, respect and support.
Cancer is a life-changing diagnosis that can leave people stunned and searching for answers. At the Cancer Center, patients can turn to our nurse navigator.
Our nationally accredited cancer program is ready to treat patients with a complete team of doctors who bring their expertise together every day.
Community Outreach on Cancer Education
In 2017, the Cancer Center partnered with the Wellness Center in its community cancer prevention efforts. About 250 children in two local elementary schools learned that poor nutrition and excess weight can increase the risk of developing cancer. Current recommendations on healthy eating and activity patterns were shared in age-appropriate classroom presentations led by Cancer Center staff, followed by an activity session with members of the Wellness Center staff.
The school teachers received educational posters and exercise game ideas to continue the healthy lifestyle message in the future. Students in grades 3-8 were asked to fill out an activity/screen-time log as well as a survey over the following week. About 50% of those were completed and returned.
Approximately 75% of the answers indicated that the classroom presentation and use of the logs helped the students reduce screen time, increase activity, and make healthier food choices. Many teachers expressed appreciation for this health and lifestyle education and are planning to use the provided materials in their future lessons.
